Les Miserables Samantha Barks
Twenty-two-year-old Samantha Barks may have been destined to play Eponine in Tom Hooper‘s ambitious Les Miserables film adaptation, given that she’d warble the iconic character’s songs into the mirror at age six and, years later, would go on to earn acclaim playing the tragic innkeepers’ daughter in London’s West End and in Les Miz‘s 25th Anniversary concert. But Barks really knew she’d made it when she found herself sparring with onscreen dad Sacha Baron Cohen on the Les Miserables set: “I can’t believe I actually spat in Ali G’s face!”

Barks’s Eponine is a standout among Hooper’s cast of known triple-threats and familiar faces, but the production required her to undertake perhaps the most difficult transition of all – adjusting from playing Eponine onstage in front of thousands to translating the character’s heartbreaking devotion to rebellious student Marius (Eddie Redmayne) for the intimacy of the screen. Her version of “On My Own,” filmed in a long, rainy shot per the film’s more virtuoso numbers, might be the umpteenth time Barks has sung the iconic ballad in her career to date, but as the Isle of Man native told Movieline, “every time I hear that song, or perform that song, it just sets my heart on fire.”

I love Eponine — she’s one of the best roles in Les Miserables, the one I identify with most. How does it feel right now to be at this point in your journey with her, this being your first film and a character you’ve lived with for so long?
I feel ecstatic because I played this role on the West End for a year, took it to the O2 Arena for the 25th anniversary, and now to the film — it kind of feels surreal to have had three different experiences of this wonderfully iconic role. Each one has been different, but I’ve spent over four years of my life making her really the most consistent thing that’s been in my life for the last couple of years, and I feel so proud just to be a part of her.
I happened to be on Twitter the night Cameron Mackintosh made the surprise announcement, onstage after your show in front of an entire theater, that you had landed Eponine in the film. There were Tweets left and right and it sounded like quite a magical way to learn that you’d won the role. Take me back to that moment. How do you remember it?
Oh, gosh. It was the most shocking, amazing piece of news I could receive, but done in the most unique way I think you could ever find out you’ve got a role, you know? It was very unheard of to find out like that! I was in a state of shock. He walked onstage as I was taking my bow and he made a speech about Oliver Twist and Charles Dickens, and he managed to segue onto the fact that I’d won the role of Eponine in the Les Miserables film! And that reaction of mine — I was just completely speechless. It’s also exciting for me to actually be able to watch that clip; I’ve seen that clip on the internet, and it’s kind of proof that the moment actually happened.
If you had to guesstimate, how many times do you think you’ve sung “On My Own” in your life?
[Laughs] It’s hard because I’m rubbish at math, but basically… eight shows a week for a year, and then the O2 performance, and then some rehearsals on top of that, plus another definite 15 takes for the film, and rehearsals — so there’s a lot of singing that song! [Ed. note: That puts Barks' number at 400+.] And it’s funny because every time I hear that song, or perform that song, it just sets my heart on fire. It’s such a tragic tale. It’s a role I relate to so much that getting to perform that song every single time makes me feel so alive. I feel so lucky to get to sing it.
You’ve played Eponine opposite Eddie Redmayne’s Marius — not to mention Nick Jonas’s Marius — but what do you see at the core of these two characters’ relationship that makes it so compelling no matter who’s playing the role?
Girls can relate to unrequited love and that’s one thing, but what not a lot of people can relate to is exactly how dark Eponine’s life is. She has a line in a song where she says, ‘Without a home, without a friend, without a face to say hello to,’ and that’s her life — Marius is really Eponine’s everything and it’s not just about falling in love with somebody on a teenage level, it’s also about somebody being your only piece of light in a very dark life, and that’s heartbreaking about Eponine.
Was Eponine always the character you loved and identified with most?
When I was six I would sing ‘On My Own’ into a hairbrush in front of a mirror and wanted to be Eponine, which is crazy because she’s got such a tragic life! It doesn’t make any sense that I’d want that for myself but it’s one of those things where you’re a young girl, ‘I want to be Eponine! Or Cosette, or Fantine, or whatever.
This is your first film, and there’s a significant difference between how performers modulate their performances for the stage versus for the camera. Did film acting come naturally to you, or did it feel alien?
Having never done a film before it was definitely something I had to learn, how to play it. I’d done the stage version of Les Miz, but for me when you come to the screen so many details shine through on camera, so you need to be a lot more detailed with it — you can’t have loose ends like you can in a theatrical piece because it’s heightened. With this you need to be more specific, you need to be detailed, and we’re so lucky to have Victor Hugo’s fantastic novel there to add those details and depth to these characters. You know in the book, Eponine spends a couple of months in prison. That gives you more of an insight into the background she comes from, and that’s why it’s more miraculous when she does eventually do a good deed.
How helpful or challenging was it to be immersed in those environments filming musical scenes in long takes, as you did with ‘On My Own,’ literally in the rain, 15 times?I imagine it’s quite a different experience than performing it on a stage without cold water and elements being thrown at you.
It was hard. The challenges were physically very difficult. Singing under a rain machine, you’re shivering all day. Someone on set was like, ‘What’s that sound?’ ‘Oh, it’s Sam’s teeth — they’re chattering!’ I can’t help it! These long takes were really fantastic because it meant that you could really build that musical arc throughout the song organically. The hard thing was sometimes Tom would say, ‘Ok guys, build a barricade — Action!’ And you’d have to build a barricade from pianos that were flying out of the windows. The adrenaline that goes through you is intense. They actually dressed up cameramen as students and sent them out amongst us. And what [Tom] does is he captures these real moments of fear that are so fantastic to be a part of, because when he yells ‘Cut!’ the adrenaline flowing through you is just like no other. It’s incredible.
What was it like to have Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter as parents?
When I first found out that I was going to be playing their daughter I thought, that’s a pretty cool claim to fame! They are the coolest onscreen parents I could ever wish for. And working with Helena — she’s so quirky and the most unique person I’ve ever met. The things she says are so fascinating and wise, it’s incredible. And Sacha is a comic genius — I grew up so obsessed with his work.
Did you watch Ali G?
Oh yeah, I used to watch Ali G in da U.S.A.! He was phenomenal. And actually, the scene we had wasn’t very comedic at all, because in the scene he slaps me and I spit in his face.
And he actually slapped you?
Yeah! We went for realism. I was like, ‘Bring it on!’ So I can blame no one but myself. I left the day with a very sore, red cheek, and he left feeling extremely gross because I’d spat at him all day. And I was like, ‘I can only apologize for that.’ I can’t believe I actually spat in Ali G’s face!

Samantha Barks likes to move fast, a trait that evidently runs in her family. Her daredevil dad, motorbike enthusiast Richard Barks, recently broke the 500cc-land-speed record, reaching speeds of up to 203 miles per hour. For her part, 22-year-old London-based Samantha, originally from the Isle of Man, has quickly gone from taking third place at the age of 17 on the BBC’s 2008 stage-musical reality show I’d Do Anything to being the only cast member from the West End production of Les Misérables to land a part in Tom Hooper’s new all-star big-screen adaptation, due out in December. In the movie Les Miz, Barks reprises her stage role as Éponine, the downtrodden waif who disastrously falls for the dashing Marius (played in the film by Eddie Redmayne). “Éponine is very relatable, especially for girls,” Barks says. “It’s the whole unrequited-love thing. I remember when I was a teenager in love for the first time—you fall for someone and you’re like, ‘Ahhhhh,’ nothing else matters. It’s the best feeling.” Barks may have just rocketed from the British stage to the big screen, but she’s surprisingly modest about her transition. When she landed the part in Hooper’s Les Misérables, she celebrated by having a cup of tea with her grandparents. Tea is a big thing in Barks’s life: She likes nothing more than a cup of rooibos accompanied by a marshmallow roasted on a tea light, and, for her last birthday, her best friend threw her a tea party. On the Les Miz film set, Barks would listen to the song “Paradise” by Coldplay to get into character. Her idol is Ricky Gervais, who she first discovered when she saw an episode of The Office on an airplane at age 10, and her favorite films include Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby (2004) and James Mangold’s Walk the Line (2005). Barks has already lined up her next role but doesn’t want to risk jinxing it by revealing what it is before the contracts are signed. “I’m just a happy person,” she says. “I love my job. I just can’t take things too seriously or look too far into the future.”

Futures: 'Les Miserables' Breakout Samantha Barks On Singing Live for Tom Hooper in the Rain and Being "Petrified" of Her Co-Stars

Samantha Barks in "Les Miserables" Universal
Why She's On Our Radar: There's no big screen newcomer more buzzed about this holiday season than Samantha Barks, the 22-year-old UK newcomer who beat out Taylor Swift to nab the part of Eponine in Tom Hooper's big-screen adaptation of the hit musical "Les Miserables" starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried.

Although this marks Barks film debut, she's no singing/acting novice having played Eponine on London's West End from 2010 to 2011, and Nancy in the UK touring production of "Oliver!." In Britain, she's best known for placing third on the televised singing competition "I'd Do Anything." It just takes a watch of Barks singing "On My Own" during the 25th anniversary performance of "Les Miserables" below, to see why she won the part.

The hype for the film's been mounting for well over a year now. How does it feel to finally share it with critics and Academy voters?

It's been amazing! It's my first film. I had no idea how a film was put together. You film each scene multiple times and it's up to your director and your editors to put it together. I didn't even know how it was going turn out. I was so excited to see how the product was going to be, and I'm so proud of it. The fact that people have been responding so positively to it has been fantastic.

The audience I saw it with treated it as if it were a Broadway show with folks applauding at the end of each number. And there are a lot of numbers...

Well that's the thing, people clapping in the cinema is just so thrilling to me. Having such a background in music theater, to see people clapping in a cinema is so cool.
Samantha Barks in "Les Miserables" Universal
So about your big number...

We did it in one continuous take about 15 times.

15 times?!

Yeah, it was quite technical because in between takes they had to snip out my mike. Because my costume was so wet they couldn't stick it to me -- they had to sow to me, take out the mic, replace the mike so it didn't get damaged between, sow it back in. Also it was raining so heavily with the rain machine, that they had to put mattresses on the rooftops to deaden the sound of rain.

So which take did they use?

I don't know! Because I'm not really aware of the film world, I didn't know about takes, single shots and closeups...I didn't know that sort of lingo. So I'd just say, "Can we do it again, can we do it again!" The thing is, once you've done it, that's it! It's forever, which is a really scary concept.

Coming from a theater background, were you totally game for Tom's singing live approach?

I was petrified and excited at the same time. I was used to live vocals, but to bring them onto a film set: it's kinda of like melding something I'm familiar with something I'm so unfamiliar with. Also working with a cast like this -- they're people I've watched for years and always respected. To be on set sharing scenes with them was petrifying, but they couldn't have been nicer.

What kind of a film career do you envision for yourself?

I would love to do more film if given the opportunity. Obviously stage is a big passion of mine. Really my aim would be to combine the two and have a varied, balanced career. Obvsiouly I look at someone like Hugh Jackman who's done it the correct way. He's got beautiful balance to his career, so he's inspiring to me in that way.

Samantha Barks in "Les Miserables" Universal
It's been confirmed that you beat out Taylor Swift for the role. That must have felt pretty sweet.

I didn't know at the time! This is such a huge deal for me, this being my first film and being the role of my life. It was so scary for me. I put so much effort and concentration into my auditions that I didn't really know what was going out outside of that audition room. My main aim was get yourself into that room and work your ass off -- do everything you can. Because it meant so much to me.

What was the auction process like?

I did have to fight hard. It was 15 weeks going in and out! That's why in the final auditions I was a mess. I had to prove that I could translate this role from the theater to the screen. It was so grueling. But so worth it now.

Spot de Canadá! con Sam!!!

 OSCARS Q&A: Samantha Barks

By THE DEADLINE TEAM | Wednesday December 12, 2012 @ 11:00pm PST
Comments (0)
Cari Lynn is an AwardsLine contributor.
If Samantha Barks is a name that’s new, that’s because Les Misérables is the first film for this Isle of Man native, who plays Éponine, the unlikely martyr who sings of unrequited love in one of the most well-known songs, “On My Own.” Barks, 22, got her start at 17 years old, on the UK reality show I’d Do Anything, where singers auditioned for a revival of the musical Oliver!. Fortuitously, one of the judges was Cameron Mackintosh, the original producer of Les Mis, who also coproduced the film.
AwardsLine: You’re the only member of the starring cast to have also played your role on stage. How did this all come about for you?
Samantha Barks: After I’d Do Anything, I was lucky to get some fantastic (stage) jobs, the first one being Sally Bowles in Cabaret. A few years later, I got a call that Cameron would like to see me for Éponine. As a musical-theater girl, who’d sing a one-woman show of Les Mis in front of my mirror, just to get to audition was exciting! And then, on my opening night of Les Mis (in the West End), Cameron announced that he’d selected me to sing as Éponine at the 25th anniversary at The 02. After (a year in Les Mis), I ended up playing Nancy in Oliver!, which is where it all began, and it was there that Cameron announced on stage, during curtain call, that I would be playing Éponine in the film. I’d been auditioning for about 15 weeks on the buildup to that, but it was the most unique way in the world you could find out you’ve got a role.
Related: OSCARS: The Supporting Actress Race
AwardsLine: Fifteen weeks seems like a long audition….
Barks: It was a very exciting process actually, to be able to work with Tom Hooper. At first, it was trying out different ways of doing the songs, because I knew the role from a theatrical sense, but it was to see if I could translate it into the film world. I learned a lot just from those auditions. Then I started going in with Eddie Redmayne (who plays Marius) and Amanda Seyfried (who plays Cosette), and that was mind-blowing, wondering what they were going to be like, because I’d never really met people like that. But they were so nervous, that’s what struck me. Amanda was nervous, and I was like, “But you’re a big movie star.” But this was a world that was new to all of us—none of us have ever sang live on film. We were all there to support each other.
Related: OSCARS Q&A: Anne Hathaway
AwardsLine: What was the most challenging part of taking this role from stage to film?
Barks: The biggest challenge was that it’s never been done like this before, so there was no right way to do it. We sang with these earpieces in—so when the audience is hearing this orchestrated version of “On My Own,” all I heard is a little, tinny piano in one ear. The piano is on set and following you, but you’re setting the tempos, and you had to picture how to create this. It was scary—but also a great leveler. You’ve got Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, and they’ve done so many films, but no one’s ever done this. And I’ve done many a theater show, but I’ve never done this. We all had something to learn off each other. But we sang each song through with each take, which is rare in film because it’s usually 10 seconds here, 10 seconds there, but what was nice is that you were really able to build in the way that you would be able to on stage. It had such an organic feeling of theater, and that’s why I think people are reacting to it the way they’ve reacted to it on stage, because what you’re getting is a throughline that is true and real.
Related: OSCARS Q&A: Eddie Redmayne
AwardsLine: Did you do any special vocal training for the film?
Barks: I’m used to singing the material day in, day out, but the difference in bringing it on to screen is that your intimate moments can be so much more intimate. You can talk in a whisper, whereas a stage whisper still has to be so exaggerated. The quieter you go, the more vocal control it takes, but it then allows you to have those payoffs, those bigger moments, it allows you to go on that journey. On stage, even when you’re dying, you’ve got to project, everyone’s got to hear your words crystal clear. But on film, you’re watching a young girl dying in the arms of the man she loves, and you’re right there with them.
Related: OSCARS: Handicapping Lead Actor Race
AwardsLine: You sing more than one song in the rain. How do you maintain your voice live?
Barks: I think we did about 15 takes of “On My Own.” There was a rain machine with freezing cold rain over my head. When you do a musical, eight shows a week for a year, you have to maintain a stamina and be so disciplined. It’s like being an athlete. Your voice is a muscle, so you have to make sure your diet is good—you can’t have anything that will make you, well, phlegmy. So no dairy before you sing, nothing spicy. You drink so much water, you steam. You’ve really got to look after yourself. We did vocal warmups all day long. Being in a (stage) show, you have to be warm for about three hours a day, but for this, you’d have to be warm and have your vocal pickup at five in the morning, even though you were still singing at 10 the last night. All day, every day, you have to be in your most perfect vocal condition, because that take of “On My Own” might be the one that is shown in cinemas all around the world. Yes, you’re in soaking rain and you’re crying and your nose is drippy and you’ve got so much to contend with—that was the big challenge. Hugh Jackman had waves crashing over him! It’s because of that that you can watch it, and it makes you even more proud because you know what you had to put yourself through to get this. All the things we did for our characters all seem worth it now.

I'll translate it later :D

Cheers!

Sam's Interview!!!/Entrevista a Sam!!

Sorry I'm in a hurry at work but here is the link!!! it's GREAT!!

Lo siento, estoy en el trabajo y con algo de prisa pero ahí esta el link!! está genial!!

Culture

When speaking of fiction, an average girl best relates to a heroine, who like them, knows nothing of the easing delight yielded by living out the Summer Finn equation. For this reason, it’s no wonder that the story of an ordinary beauty harbouring unrequited love for her friend Marius should evoke sympathy, despite her sometimes not-so-honourable behaviour towards the tale’s kind-hearted and fairy-tale lovely heroine — beloved of the very same Marius.
Charging the role of Éponine with a piercing raw purity, Hollywood newcomer Samantha Barks, holds her own in the musical blockbuster Les Misérables amongst a heavy-hitting cast including Anne Hathaway, Russel Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne. Directed by Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech), the film has been generating buzz since casting began early last year, with anticipation soaring following the release of teasers showing off the vocals of Hathaway — hair snipped to her scalp — singing “I Dreamed a Dream” in the role of Fantine.
While cinema audiences will be meeting Barks for the first time in Les Misérables, the 22-year-old actress is already an established name on the theatre bill in London’s West End. Her introduction to the scene came when she was 17 in the form of the BBC reality TV series I’d Do Anything, where contestants competed for the part of Nancy in the West End revival of the musical Oliver!. While Barks was not crowned winner, she went on to play the part of Nancy in the musical later on down the road. It was in fact during the curtain call of Oliver! that Barks was met by mega theatrical producer Cameron Mackintosh with the news of her casting in the film adaptation of Les Misérables. Far from an introduction to the role, Barks had at that point in time already perfected her Éponine twice over, first in the West End, and then in the musical’s sold out 25th anniversary production, staged at the city’s O2 arena.
A slight figure made big by an indomitable spirit sunk in a sprawling wasteland, Barks plays the part of Éponine with evocative authenticity. Her performance is one of passion, sorrow and innocence; a sensitive and intuitive portrayal of an unhappy soul conflicted by wanting the one she loves, and resigning herself to helping him obtain the happiness he seeks in the love of another. “It’s interesting to me that Éponine is so streetwise and tough, and has only ever experienced a world full of dark characters,” says Barks of her character. “When she meets Marius, he is a good person, and in a way shines a light on her dark soul, making her feel exposed, and almost nervous to interact with him.”
Green though Barks may be in comparison to her co-stars, we predict this little triple threat from the remote Isle of Man will hear the people sing with praise come the release of Les Misérables on Christmas day. Gearing up for her film’s premiere, Barks takes a moment to talk to FILLER about her first feature experience, her co-stars, and the affection she feels for her character, Éponine.

Let’s start by talking about the magical way you were told you got the part of Éponine. Did you nearly fall off your feet when producer Cameron Mackintosh came on stage to share the news?

It was the most shocking moment of my life.To find out such life changing news — especially in the way I found out — was so shocking, I can barely remember it. It was like something from a dream!

I can only imagine! During the audition process, was it difficult tuning out the talk about singers/actresses such as Taylor Swift and Scarlett Johansson being shortlisted for the part, or were you able to just focus on nailing the part despite all the hype buzzing around?

This was the biggest opportunity of my life so far, so it was hundred percent crucial that I ignored all the media hype surrounding the casting process, that way I could give my entire focus to to the part itself.

For more than some fans of Les Misérables, Éponine is the one their heart goes out to rather than Cosette, perhaps because of the romance of unrequited love. Why do you think so many adore her as a heroine, despite her sometimes questionable morality?

Unrequited love is something we all go through at some stage in our lives. I think in some way, it’s actually easier to relate to than actually falling head over heels in love with your “soul mate” because that isn’t always the way things pan out. She comes from parents who are criminals, so her morality is very twisted. She does eventually do the right thing, but this brave act only makes her ending more tragic.

She’s a complex character, tough, but sensitive at the same time.

I wanted to show her insecurities, while remaining the streetwise tough cookie that she is! I love the escapism that’s described in the number “On My Own,” but also the strength in character with the line: “and I know it’s only in my mind.” I wanted to portray both those aspects. She has never felt love before, or really seen much of the existence of love. She is left conflicted as to weather to choose the path of good or choose the path that feels most natural to her. I think love redeems her in the end, which makes her a character I feel for.

It’s true, it’s hard not to feel for her. When you auditioned for I’d Do Anything back in 2008, did you imagine that you would end up in film?

My goal when I auditioned for I’d Do Anything was to gain fantastic experiences both in life, and for my career. Singing with Idina Mendel and Liza Minnelli certainly ticked those boxes! I never dreamed I would one day star in a movie, I am still pinching myself!

And what a way to do it! To transition from stage to film by way of a star-studded blockbuster musical production must have been nerve-wracking. Were you intimidated at first?

Singing live is something I feel comfortable with, however, camera work is totally new so it was mixed feelings! I think I was entering a world I knew nothing about, but at least was entering with a character I knew a lot about, which was comforting!

Coming from a stage background, did you change or adjust your style of acting for the big screen?

I had to adjust my acting style for the movie because I no longer had to project emotions or my voice to the back of a theatre, I could allow those intimate details to come through. I found the experience thrilling!

How was it working with director Tom Hooper?

Tom is an incredible director! His eye for detail is incredible, but he always allows you that freedom to discover your character, and guided you through it. I still can’t believe how lucky I am to have worked with him. The man is a genius!
